will audience Chechens

The President of the
EP Delegation with the Russian Federation Bart Staes have announced an
audition with three Chechen ministers on the situation in Chechnya, to
be held on Thursday 14 March during the plenary session of the EP in Strasbourg.
The Parliament will
hear: Mr. Akhmed Zakaev, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister
of Culture and negotiator appointed by President Maskhadov, Mr. Ylias
Akhmadov, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Oumar Khanbiev, Minister of
Health.
Staes initiative is
interpreted as the first concrete response to the 14th day of Olivier
Dupuis' hunger strike for Chechnya.
Olivier Dupuis, Secretary
of the Transnational Radical Party and Member of the European Parliament
stated that "On the 14th day of my hunger strike, I can only welcome
the decision by my colleague the President of the EP Delegation with Russia
Bart Staes to organise an audition in the EP of the Chechen ministers
Zakaiev, Akhmadov and Khanbiev. This is the first concrete move in the
direction of an assumption of responsibilities by the European Parliament,
which as far as the Chechen tragedy is concerned has developed the unfortunate
habit of accepting the irresponsible policy of the Council and the shameful
policy of Commissioner Poul Nielson without turning a hair." Agency
