Russian Nezavisimaya Gazeta interviews Nino Burdzhanadze,
Georgia's acting president
|
|
24.12.2003
Nino Burdzhanadze, Georgia's acting president, is arriving in Moscow
for a two-day official visit today. The acting president's press
office said Tiflis attached immense importance to the visit, as
its results would determine Georgian-Russian relations in general.
Ms Burdzhanadze gave an interview to Nezavisimaya Gazeta ahead of
the visit, saying Georgia's new authorities were seeking to improve
relations with Russia, which had come to a standstill. Bilateral
relations can still get better. It is time to build relations with
Russia from scratch, said Ms Burdzhanadze. The new government has
no intention of maintaining relations as they are today, as this
would be absolutely senseless, she said. However, a still more important
issue Ms Burdzhanadze wants to clarify in Moscow is whether Russia
will support the new authorities and the January 4 presidential
elections in Georgia, says Nezavisimaya Gazeta. This is a set of
issues, which dominated the agenda of a recent visit to Moscow by
Georgian Foreign Minister Tedo Dzhaparidze. Visa endorsement on
passports by the proper authorities denoting that it has been examined
and that the bearer may proceed is one of the items in Ms Burdzhanadze's
agenda. Ms Burdzhanadze meets President Vladimir Putin tomorrow.
